The mission of the English as a Second Language Department is to prepare the eighth-grade students for the requirements of an academic career at ACS as well as to provide the ninth-grade students with opportunities to develop and expand their knowledge of key grammar, vocabulary, and lexico-grammatical areas as required by the rigorous academic program at ACS. This is accomplished by providing students with a solid understanding of the English language as well as building their academic confidence and competence, so that they can successfully fulfill the requirements of content-area classes in English. All language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) receive constant attention. Quality instruction in a friendly yet structured environment that fosters mutual respect and intellectual curiosity is a major goal of the department. A vital part of the ESL curriculum is developing study skills, which are essential for the success of each student throughout their studies at ACS. Students learn how to use a daily and monthly planner, organize their time and study materials, take notes in class, study for and take tests and quizzes, and behave properly in an academic environment. Strong relationships and good communication between and among teachers, students, and parents are valued and encouraged.
