Athletics and Intramural House Competitions
The American College of Sofia offers a diverse athletic program for students. The program fosters the development of athletic skills, while promoting important concepts of teamwork, communication, responsibility, and leadership. In 2009, the athletic program was formatted to create seasonal schedules. Such a structure provides student-athletes with the opportunity to play on multiple athletic teams each year. In addition, seasonal training supports a more intense acquisition of skills over a period of a few months. This model allows students to focus on one sport at a time, while allowing for optimal use of the school facilities. Regular competitions are arranged with Sofia-area schools and international schools during the season. The ACS House based Advisory System was developed in 2008, and the intramural portion of the program promotes the notion of the “student-athlete.” As part of the weekly schedule, all students have the opportunity to play in school-wide intramural games. The intramural program encourages life-long learning skills, such as cooperation, self-reflection, and school spirit. Additionally, the House Intramural Program teaches students to practice a healthy lifestyle by incorporating exercise into their daily routines.
