Our Seniors Successfully Ran First ACS Model United Nations Conference

On March 23-24, 2019, three ACS seniors successfully accomplished their Senior Independent Honors Project, the 1st ACS Model United Nations Conference. Supervised by Dr. Zornitsa Semkova and with SAF funding, the conference was organized by Aleksandra Zidarova, Vladislava Mateva, and Christo Simov, and was made possible by the efforts of the members of the ACS MUN Club who chaired the sessions and helped with whatever tasks were necessary to perform in the course of the conference. Among them, the contribution of Joana Nikolova, Simona Barokova, Yoan Uluzov, and Lora Dimitrova deserves special recognition.

In result, delegate students from five schools in Sofia, ACS, 91 German Language School, Anglo-American School of Sofia, German School of Sofia, and the 7th Secondary School “Sveti Sedmochislenici”, represented 19 countries and discussed two main topics in two committees, as well as dealt with two emergency crises. The Security Council (SC) tackled the problem of conflict resolution in the South China Sea and the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SHCC) considered the issue of protection of cultural heritage in conflict zones. In the committees, five UN resolutions were prepared and successfully passed through the session of the General Assembly presided by the SIHP students.

“It was a pleasure to host students from beyond the immediate ACS community and to work in such a productive and friendly manner for two very intense days. We would like to express our appreciation of the dedication of our guest delegates and our hope that new friendships have been forged and that the initiative will become an annual event for the Sofia MUN community.” – Dr. Semkova commented.
