To Members of the ACS Community:

As many of you know, last week the American College of Sofia was inspected by a visiting team of distinguished international educators as part of the process of re-accreditation. Accreditation is a voluntary process by which schools agree to submit to review by education experts -- an internationally respected guarantee that assures universities and employers that we are providing a safe and high-quality education for all of our students.
Over the past year, members of the American College of Sofia community have been working to prepare a comprehensive self-study as part of our normal re-accreditation with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. On October 21-24, a team of experts from MSA will conduct an inspection visit to verify the quality of both the College’s programs and its goals for improvement over the next seven years.

This year’s Graduation Ceremony marked a very special moment not just for the ACS Class of 2015, but also for the ACS President Dr. Paul K. Johnson. Five years ago both the graduating Class of 2015 and Dr. Johnson arrived on campus for the first time. In a moving speech Dr. Johnson reflected on the joyful experience of watching the students grow into responsible and inspiring adults, and congratulated them on the respect they had always demonstrated for each other’s achievements.
On Wednesday, May 20th, six of our 8th grade ESL teachers debated for a cause, raising 2,403 Leva to send to disaster relief in Nepal. Ms. Allen, Mr. Bleiweis, Mr. Deegan, Ms. Ivanova, Ms. O’Hara, and Ms. Zmolek-Smith all performed in a World Schools Debate for the ACS community to see. The idea came up as a response to the 8th grade debate project where all ACS 8th graders learned this format of debate in their classes and debated. “Debating is hard and we wanted to show the students that we too, as teachers, are willing to put ourselves in the same situation even if it was uncomfortable” said Ms. Allen. None of the teachers who participated had ever debated in public before, but motivated by their students and the cause, chose to debate.
As an English Fluency project last month Ms. Sarah Grimesey (English Language and Literature) asked students to participate in poets.org's "Dear Poet" writing contest. In this contest, students had to choose one of 8 poems to study and then write a letter about. In the letter, students were encouraged to explain to the poet what the poem meant to the individual reader.
