A Century of Tradition, New Heights: ACS Launches the 2026 - 2027 Academic Year
September 10, 2026 – The American College of Sofia (ACS) officially opened the 2026–2027 academic year at its historic campus in Sofia, Bulgaria. The school year is particularly significant as ACS celebrates 100 years since construction began on its Sofia campus in 1926.
ACS traces its roots to 1860, when missionary schools in Plovdiv and Stara Zagora were established, later merging in Samokov in 1871 before moving to Sofia. Today, ACS continues its tradition of academic excellence. Graduates of the Class of 2026 were accepted to prestigious universities in Bulgaria and worldwide, while ACS students earned 1st place with perfect scores at the National Mathematics and History Olympiads and won 19 medals (12 gold, 7 silver) at the Math Olympiad in Frankfurt.
With more than 100 student clubs and dedicated academic and career counseling, ACS offers a diverse educational experience. Admission is based on merit through a competitive entrance examination, while tuition assistance ensures that admitted students can attend regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. Students from outside Sofia can also live in Persky House dormitory on campus, which provides a safe and supportive environment.
Founded in 1860, ACS is the oldest American educational institution outside the U.S. and offers dual Bulgarian and American diplomas.
