ACS Model UN 5.0 a Resounding Success

by Dr. Zornitsa Semkova

We congratulate seniors Adrian Doerfler, Zara Filipova, and Svetlozar Dimitrov on their impeccably organized and executed Senior Independent Honors Project—the fifth edition of the ACS Model United Nations Conference! Everyone closely involved with the realization of the conference can admit that it was an amazing experience!

Over the past weekend, 50 students from ACS, Deutsche Schule Sofia, Uwekind International School, 91. German Language School, 9 French Language School in Sofia, Bulgaria, 2 High School “Emiliyan Stanev”, National High School of Mathematics & Natural Sciences "Academician Lyubomir Chakalov" either as delegates or volunteers held intense sessions searching for diplomatic solutions to current and historical international crises in order to promote peace and cooperation and to create a better future for humanity.

At the opening ceremony, the conference was addressed by our prominent key-note speakers— Ms. Sargent Beasley and Mr. Ivan Gospodinov, Director of the UN and Global Affairs Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two committees, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (GA4), and the Historical Crisis Committee, discussed the topics of Tackling the Issue of Neo-colonialism in the Economic Sector and its Effects on Sovereignty in Africa and Assessment of Peacekeeping operations in the Middle East, and negotiated a peace treaty to end the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.

Both committees worked excellently due to the very serious level of preparation demonstrated by the delegates as well as the masterful leadership of the honorable committee chairs, two of the SIHP leaders—Adrian Doerfler & Zara Filipova—as well as Mihaela Emanuilova '25, Nikola Markov '25, Mina Shopov '27, and Raya Hadzhiyska '26. All committees managed to pass thoughtful and relevant resolutions and to reach mutual agreements. We should also address our appreciation to Svetlozar Dimitrov who flawlessly ensured that everything runs smoothly and that delegates had the best possible experience—both inside and outside the committee rooms.

The awards were split between ACS, Deutsche Schule Sofia, and 91 German Language School as follows:

GA4

- Best position paper: Dimana Valkova (Iran) DSS

- Honorable mention: Lenard Wolf (Israel) DSS

- Best delegate: Konstantin Govedarov (Belgium) ACS

- Honorable Mention: Krassen Dimitrov (Mohamed Fawzi, Egypt) DSS

- Best Delegate: Trayan Georgiev (Moshe Dayan, Israel) 91 German Language School "Prof. Konstantin Galabov"

The conference would have been impossible without the generous support of the Student Activities Fund and our generous sponsors—Hotel Vega and Mondelez Bulgaria.

A big thank you to the ACS Filmmaking Club, led by Bozhana Medarova, to the students from the ACS Photography Club, who documented the conference through their photographic lenses, to Ms. Sargent-Beasely, and everyone else who supported this conference.
