FISSION 2024 COMING UP

Applications Deadline: February 18, 2024

The ninth edition of the annual FISSION International Science Fair will take place on April 12-13, 2024 on campus. The fair is organized by a team of ambitious АCS students with the help of ACS Physics teacher Dr. Krasimira Chakarova and the school’s administration.

The science fair is open to students in Grade 5-12 from Bulgaria and the world. Within FISSION, they will have the opportunity to present their projects in diverse categories like biomedical, biological, and chemical sciences, ecology and environmental sciences, computer science, mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering. Each project is evaluated by a jury team of established scientists and experts in the respective fields. After a whole day of careful evaluation, the jury awards the outstanding projects with “Best Project” Award or “Honorable Mention” Award in each category, and all students receive a certificate of participation.

The schedule of the event includes tours of the beautiful school campus, workshops and lectures for participants and their team advisers, various networking opportunities, talks from guest speakers and much more.

Accommodation is secured for the night on the 12th April for all teams coming from outside of Sofia, with food and drinks available for all participants and their advisors throughout the day of the fair.

Last year's FISSION was a huge success and was the first in-person edition since 2019. ACS hosted 104 students and their advisors and provided an inclusive platform for the presentation of 55 innovative projects. The festival started off with a ceremony in the Whitaker Auditorium at the College. Partners of the event and esteemed ACS alumnus Apostol Dyankov '01 and Petar Milev from World Wide Fund For Nature Bulgaria delivered a compelling speech about climate change in Bulgaria, and invited participants in FISSION to get involved in their important program.

Traditional Bulgarian folk dances performed by the ACS Folk Dancing Club marked the end of the opening ceremony, with the audience then joining for a Pravo horo around Ostrander Hall. The rest of the day, participants were tirelessly sharing their projects, defending their ideas, and elaborating on each other’s work.

We are proud to share that once again official partner of FISSION is New Bulgarian University.

This year FISSION will again welcome participants from all around the globe and encourage them to share their bold ideas in all branches of science. More information can be found on the FISSION website, as well as in FISSION’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
