Spas Stoimenov Earns Top Honors at National IT Olympiad

Congratulations!

Spas with his ACS IT teacher and project mentor Ms. Elka Kondakova

Junior Spas Stoimenov ’26 from the American College of Sofia has delivered an outstanding performance at the regional round of the Information Technology Olympiad with his innovative project, "Neural Networks in Image Recognition,” whereby artificial intelligence software recognizes the Bulgarian sign language alphabet and transforms messages into written text. Competing in the highly challenging "Big Data" category, Spas earned an impressive second place-an achievement that alone sets him apart. But the excitement didn’t stop there: out of over 40 pre-qualified projects nationwide, Spas was one of only 15 to be selected to advance to the prestigious national round, a testament to the exceptional quality and impact of his work.

At the national stage, Spas truly shined, winning second place with his groundbreaking project. His remarkable performance earned him the distinguished title of Laureate of the IT Olympiad, along with an excellent grade of 6.00, highlighting his mastery and dedication in this fiercely competitive competition.

At the ACS Science Fair last month, Spas won The Best Overall Project Audience Award, while at the International Science Festival FISSION,  it was chosen as the Best Computer Science Project.

The entire ACS community is bursting with pride and enthusiasm as Spas continues to make waves in the world of IT innovation-congratulations on this incredible journey and well-deserved success!
