Martenitsi Workshop in ACS

On February 19, 2014 the Art club at the American College of Sofia started preparing for the coming spring and organized a martenitsi workshop in the Arts classroom. All the boys and girls from the club got valuable knowledge and ideas from the martenitsi artist Ms. Tania Ivanova from the town of Stara Zagora.

The previous martenitsi workshop was held in 2012. What was new this year is that along with the traditional techniques for making martenitsi such as twisting strings, making the classical Pizho and Penda and tassels, Ms. Ivanova brought silkworm cocoons and offered the students to use them in their unique martenitsi. There were also twigs which the students decorated with white and red thread. All worked with great enthusiasm and invested a lot of unconventional thinking.

Ms. Kateri Couture-Latour, who is a teacher at the College for the first year, for whom this is the first year at the College, showed great interest in the traditional Bulgarian custom and joined the workshop.

The unique martenitsi will be displayed for sale in Ostrander Hall Foyer the week before March 1.
