Lacrosse Demonstration on Campus

On February 27, 2015 ACS students participated in a demonstration of the sport of lacrosse. Originally created by Native Americans--according to some records the game dates back to the 15th century--lacrosse is played with 2 teams carrying wooden sticks with nets on the end. A ball is passed between teammates' sticks as they try to move the ball toward the opponents' goal. If a player shoots a ball from the net in their stick into the goal they score a point.

Chase Philpott, an American English teacher in Burgas with the Fulbright education program, led the demonstration. He is a lacrosse player and fan who is trying to generate interest in the sport throughout Bulgaria. Chase visited ACS, along with some players from the Sofia youth lacrosse team--named the Ninjas--to show ACS students how the game is played. After brief instruction and practice, ACS students played an exhibition lacrosse game. The students enjoyed learning about and trying out this new sport.

This demonstration was planned and organized by Chase Philpott and ACS English teacher Scott Bleiweis, in coordination with PE director Stefka Papazova.
